FIRE IN PLASTIC FURNITURE FACTORY DESTROYS 150 HOMES

05th February 2025

The fire broke out in the early hours of November 18, 2024 in Bawana, with initial reports suggesting a short circuit in the factory as the cause. The factory, which produces plastic furniture, stored highly flammable plastic granules and chemicals used in chair manufacturing. These combustible materials fuelled the blaze, which quickly spread to the densely packed slum area adjacent to the factory.

In response to the emergency, 18 fire and rescue vehicles were rushed to the scene, working tirelessly for several hours to control the fire.  By 8:00 am the blaze was finally brought under control, but there was significant damage to both factory and across the surrounding community.

While no fatalities were reported, the impact and disruption caused by the fire was significant with hundreds of families left homeless. Local authorities provided immediate relief to the community, including temporary housing and essential supplies. It is unclear whether the business has been able to recover since the fire.

The tragedy underscores the severe risks posed by the proximity of industrial facilities to residential areas, particularly those that handle flammable materials. It also highlights the critical need for stronger fire safety regulations and early fire suppression, coupled with better urban planning to protect residents in high-risk areas.
