10th ANNUAL FLPFI MEMBERS FORUM DRIVES NATIONAL BUILDING CODE REFORM

Held on the 15th and 16th November at the Ramada Resorts in Kochi, the two-day conference brought together leading fire safety experts to comprehensively examine and debate the necessary code changes to the National Building Code of India 2016: Part 4 Fire and Life Safety.
Following an introduction by Srikanth Yajjala, FLPFI’s Executive Secretary and Codes and Standards Consultant for FM, Vinod Kapse of Kapse Consultants, delivered his opening presentation which detailed proposed code changes in the NBC 2016. FM’s Principal Code Consultant Thomas Roche continued this theme, delivering a presentation on The Rise of Combustible Construction and providing in-depth analysis of the risks involved in modern building techniques and the importance of understanding fire testing.
Fire Consultant Tarak Chakraborty’s presentation, Revisiting NBC 2016 - Concerning Fire & Life Safety, explored different aspects of the code while the day’s last presentation - The whys behind Sprinkler Trade-ups in IBC - was delivered by Mark Fessenden, Managing Director of the International Fire Suppression Alliance (IFSA) who decoded the current US International Building Code framework.
Day two’s theme delved into NBC reform in further detail focusing on fire and life safety, with Abhay Purandare’s presentation - Code Changes in NBC Part 4. This was followed by a lively debate from all members on promoting best practice and the way forward in terms of NBC reform.
The two day event not only highlighted the current challenges on fire safety regulatory reform but also charted a clear path for future improvements.
The FLPFI is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to help drive regulatory change and promote best practice. It’s ‘build to last’ philosophy focuses on loss prevention standards and loss prevention technologies that support building resilience in India.
